Will the Minister of PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES AND PENSIONS be pleased to state:-

(a) whether the Government proposes to give reservation in Government jobs to the people belonging to the Economically Backward Classes; and

(b) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

ANSWER

Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office. (DR. JITENDRA SINGH)

(a) & (b): At present, there is no proposal to give reservation to the people belonging to Economically Backward Classes in Central Government jobs. The Hon’ble Supreme Court in the case of Indra Sawhney has, inter-alia, held, that economical backwardness cannot be the sole criterion for providing reservation.

Further, the Commission for Economically Backward Classes (CEBC) which submitted its Report to the Government on 22nd July, 2010 did not recommend the reservation for Economically Backward Classes.

  1. Economic backwardness exist in every religion and every caste.Reservation based on caste is not good and it brings acrimony among different castes. It will have bad impact on new generation’s mind.I know a number of so called forward class who work as house servant, daily labour, peons, sweeper, etc.Where i work,i have my subordinate incharge and controlling officer belonging to SC/ST.Their salary is much higher than that of mine.Their living standard is much better than that of mine. But when it comes to getting reservation my child will be denied reservation who infact needs reservation simply because he is born in a so called forward class family. On the contrary no matter how well-off a person of SC/ST community is,their child get reservation.I want ask the government how justified it is?Is it good for our country?
