Callidai Empowers the Disabled in the Army

Another initiative taken by the army, gave further impetus to ‘welfare’, on 21 July 2010, by empowering the disabled soldiers. The Indian Army has taken a small but significant step, in capacity building, by signing a MoU with Callidai Motor Works, through which disabled soldiers or their wards and families will be trained in facilities, to be set up by the Army in its Regimental Training Centres.

This facility will be manned by experts from the firm. After successful training, the disabled personnel will be absorbed by Callidai Motor Works as its sales cum maintenance representatives for their products range of wheelchairs, both manual and automated.

The MoU aims at progressively staffing each district of the Country with a trained representative. The Army and Callidai Motor Works have jointly partnered an attractive ‘terms and remuneration’ package, which was inked today. The MoU was signed by Mr Bhargav Sundaram, Chief Executive of Callidai Motor Works and Lt Gen VK Chaturvedi, ADG Personal Services, in the presence of Lt Gen Mukesh Sabharwal, Adjutant General and other Senior officers at South Block.

The last one year has seen a slew of measures undertaken by the Adjutant General’s Branch of Indian Army to take concrete time based actions to empower the rank and file and prepare them for an honourable second career. Kick started by the first of its kind, Project Gyandeep, a tie up with IGNOU, it was followed by Project Kshamta with Microsoft.

The Army representative from the Personnel Services Directorate of the Adjutant General’s Branch mentioned that there were many more similar Projects on the anvil and announcements would soon follow.
