Will the Retirement age of central government employees go up from 60 to 62?
As we heard every time before the budget session of parliament, this time also a rumor about raising the retirement age of central government employees from 60 to 62 spreading here and there among the central government employees. May be the officers at the verge of retirement be happy about this rumor. Otherwise there is no reason to be happy about this rumor.. As India is having 51% of people below the age of 25 years , it is not a good news to millions of jobless people. Sources close to the trade union movements and Federations told that there is no such proposal with the government since none of the workers federations have demanded it.
In 2009, The Manmohan Singh government was serious in weighing the pros and cons of increasing the retirement age for government employees from 60 to 62 years.That time it was believed that the finance ministry had prepared a detailed note on the issue and sent it to the prime minister’s office (PMO) But the government shelved the idea, largely because of fears that a higher retirement age would adversely impact employment generation and create resentment in the bureaucracy because of blocked promotional avenues. At that time, it was the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) that was asked by the PMO to study the issue and prepare a report.
The BJP led National Democratic Alliance government had raised the retirement age from 58 to 60, in 1998, a move that benefitted 90,000 government servants and 50,000 defence personnel. At the time, the logic was: the retirement of 140,000 employees would have cost Rs 5,200 crore whereas paying salaries cost only Rs 1,493 crore.
Incase if the decision is finally taken, it will only be the third time the government will have raised the retirement age. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister to have increased the age of superannuation from 55 to 58 following the 1962 war with China. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government did it a second time in 1998.

As per a study, the future pension outgo for the existing Central and State government employees is estimated at a staggering R1,735,527 crore or 55.88% of GDP at market prices of 2004-05. Only solution is to increase retirement age to 62.
i am strongly against the increase the retirement age because there are a lot of unemployed youth generations in India. Further in India the most ofb the aged people work less and they may be technically sound but physically unfit or unsound. Moreover in indian mentality, they think that they knows everything and other young goups (though they may be more technically sound and honest)of next generation are good for nothing. Government should not consider the superannuation age increasing but they should think how they can use these superannuated forces to other jobs after retirement such as NGO works,health care works, education fields etc.
Before we start debate on this topic it must be kept in the mind that what is the number of posts which are filled in lieu of retirements and as our population growth rate there should be growth in the vacancies due increas in work load, should be kept in mind. The Govt. is decreasing the posts and the work is shared with the present staff, it will effect the overall efficiency of the work done by the staff. If vacancies are increased the retirement age should be decreased accordingly if required. It is a fact that in any govt. instiution the number of posts which was in 1980 has not been increased but decreased.
I THINK THAT IF SUPERANNUATION AGE IS INCREASES FROM 60 YEARS TO 62 YEARS THAT IS MORE BENEFICENT TO GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES FOR CENTRAL AS WELL AS STATE GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES HOWEVER MANY STATE GOVERNMENT HAVE ALREADY BEEN APPROVED SUCH TYPE STAPES/PROPOSAL,
BECAUSE THE AGE OF ENTRANCE IS ALSO INCREASED 28 YEARS INSTEAD OF 25 YEARS .THAN I AM AGREE AND WARM WELL COME IF SUCH TYPE STEP/IMPLANTATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED BY THE HONORABLE OUR GOVERNMENT.

I Think Govtshould review the retirement age, basically in the departments where people prefer less to take a job, like for e.g in academics fewer people prefer to join academics in engineering side and there is lot of crises of qualified faculty,therefore Govt has already increased their retirment age to 65 years in IIT’s and NIT’s.
ON similar pattern instead of increasing the retiremnt age uniformly in whole Govt sector, It is need to review those departments where it is difficult to find qualified peoples and the work get affected due to retirements thus and the retirement age could be increased. For e.g if we see in defence there are lot of seats vacant for officers,in this case retirement age could be increased, and on other side in bueraucracy i.e IAS etc we can find people more than required and is highly prefered job in such cases the retirement age could be decreased.
Now it is high time to review the pattern on the basis of demand and supply instead of blindly increasing or decresing the retirement age for complete Govt. system
